Conducting Surveillance
Surveillance is usually billed on an hourly basis plus a mileage charge. Rates are sometimes dependant on where the surveillance will take place. Surveillance, if conducted properly by a licensed investigator, is a record of what actually occurred during the surveillance period and can be used during subsequent litigation. A licensed private investigator is an impartial party to the dispute.
Insurance Companies
Insurance companies will employ the services of private investigators in attempt to verify or defeat these fraudulant claims. The private investigators evidence is usually the only evidence an insurance company can rely on to honor or refuse to pay a claim or determine if it is legit. Insurance investigators sometimes called fraud investigators are assigned to special investigation units or (SIU) , throughout the world where the insurance company has claims offices or field branch offices. Many SIU employees work out of their homes or small offices.
Police and Private Investigators
Police reports and signed statements from witnesses to the death are also often needed. Newspaper accounts of the subject’s death can also help the investigator develop needed facts. Police Forces do not always have the manpower and time to devote to solving these crimes. By using the same evidence gathering techniques, the professional private investigator can supplement the overworked police officer.
Information may be used to find someone or something, reveal details about a person?s character, solve a mystery or solve a crime. Detective is a title in many law enforcement agencies for those investigators in the upper echelons. Information usually includes the following: past employment, credit worthiness, and criminal history . These checks are important because they allow better informed and less-subjective evaluations to be made about a person but also pose risks.
Verification
Check with the state licensing agency to verify a private investigator’s license. Links to most state private investigator licensing agencies are listed on the corresponding state page in our directory. Check the yellow pages for a licensed investigator who specializes in spousal, matrimonial, or domestic investigations, as infidelity investigations are sometimes called. Even better - try to get a recommendation from a divorce attorney or someone you know and trust. Check your local community college to see what courses they might offer, because many of them offer classes taught by private investigators. The courses offered here at PI-CEU are primarily for those who are already licensed, although some of these courses may help you decide whether or not to become a private investigator.
