And this also applies to the relationship you have with your partner, your parents, and other family members and friends that are also a part of your child’s life. It’s also important to take good care of yourself. When we’re giving your attention to what’s right for our son or daughter it’s so easy to pass over our own needs. Your son or daughter and your family are counting on you both emotionally and physically, so it’s imperative that you teach your son or daughter by example that looking after yourself aids you to take care of them and the rest of your family. This teaches your son or daughter that not only do you care deeply for them and all the family, but you care deeply for yourself also. This is an important move in teaching your child about self pride. This may involve organizing a sitter and treating yourself to dinner and a movie, or doing some favorite pastime on your own. This demonstrates to your son or daughter that you are not just their parent, but a an individual with your needs and interests. It also gives them an opportunity to show you how well they can cope when you are not there for a short time.

It’s also very important to cultivate your relationship with your partner. Let your son or daughter see you communicate in a positive and healthy way with each other, and show love and affection for each other so your son or daughter can begin to learn from a very young age what a healthy relationship should be like.

You’ll soon discover your son or daughter basing many of their behaviors after your own. So make sure that what you say and do around your son or daughter will help build a strong sense of security and self pride.
