My best friends husband was paid really well at his job as a roofer . On the side, he also worked for this company that did Residential Deck Cleaning, but mostly he did roofing. According to him, it was quite a crazy job and people got injured and even killed a lot. One day he fell off the roof and hurt his neck and back, that was the end of his career as a roofer, there was no way he could go back to it . So he asked if my father could help him become a stationary engineer, the type that works in boiler rooms, though it’s all mostly computerized now. My father has been a stationary engineer for decades and is quite high up in their union in terms of seniority. Now Pete’s enrolled in trade school classes and in a few months should have an apprenticeship. The classes are what weed the bad people out, because they last so long, a lot of people can’t handle that many classes for that long . According to my sister, her husband has only gone through a few weeks of the first class and is second guessing his decision to go into this field . It’s been years since he’s had any type of schooling and that’s hard enough, but he’s not making enough money now to get by. As an apprentice he will not be making that much, because he will just basically be watching what is going on and not doing anything productive . I haven’t had the chance to personally speak with him so I do not know how he feels about all of this .
