The HEPA Vacuum Cleaner
The first vacuum cleaner was invented and Patented in the USA by Robert Taber in 1869. Taber invented a wood and canvas hand pump controlled vacuum cleaner in his Chicago, Illinois home. Today’s vacuum cleaners come with options and features that yesterday’s housecleaners could only dream about. With the flip of a switch you can change from cleaning carpets to hardwood or tile floors. With the press of a button you can remove a plastic bin filled with debris instead of dealing with messy bags. The right vacuum cleaner can make vacuuming a relative breeze, but the wrong vacuum makes cleaning nothing more than a burdensome chore.
In the 1940’s HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters were invented to filter out radioactive dust particulate contaminants in bomb shelters during the atomic bomb tests. The most common airborne particles are about 2.4 microns but the average vacuum cleaner only vacuums up particles from 30 to 50 microns in size, blowing the rest of the allergens back into the air. The most harmful sized particulates are about .3 microns in size. HEPA filters were designed to capture particles down to 0.3 microns in size at efficiency ratings of 99.97%. This standard is still used to this day for HEPA vacuum cleaners and HEPA air cleaners for asbestos and lead abatement. However HEPA vacuum cleaners are now used every day in homes and businesses to clean and remove household dust and allergens to improve the indoor air quality you breathe.
Hepa Air cleaners will only do part of the job needed by an allergy sufferer in order to keep their environment clean. A hepa air cleaner tends to draw towards its filter those allergens which are already air borne. On the other hand a hepa vacuum cleaner will clean up those allergens and dust which have settled on furniture floors and carpets These “settled” allergens keep getting stirred up [and subsequently inhaled] by human movement in a room. For this reason, it is advisable to use a special high-filtration vacuum cleaner that captures and contains even the finest particles.
